Hello! (English)Hello! I am Yuhyeon Seo (pronounced [ju:hjən sə:] 서유현 ユーヒョン ソー), a Ph.D. candidate in linguistics at Purdue University. I am a member of the Purdue Experimental Phonetics and Phonology Lab (Director: Dr. Olga Dmitrieva) and the Purdue Bilingualism Lab (Director: Dr. Daniel J. Olson).
My research focuses on phonetics and phonology of bilingual speakers, investigating cross-linguistic influence in their speech production and perception. This exploration encompasses both long and short-term influences on L1 and L2 speech, shedding light on topics, such as heritage language and code-switching. In furthering this line of research, I leverage computationally robust methods including Bayesian modeling, simulation-based power analysis, and machine learning techniques for acoustic analysis. My dissertation project investigates L2 cross-linguistic influence on the L1 phonetic and phonological systems of two types of bilinguals: Korean heritage speakers and long-term immigrants in the US. Key words in my dissertation: cross-linguistic influence, phonetic drift, heritage language, L1 attrition, transfer, cue weighting, perceptual discrimination, Korean, English, tonogenesis, the Speech Learning Model As a secondary interest, I also branch out into experimental morphosyntax, with a particular focus on heritage speakers. |
